Tips to Avoid Theft During a Trip

Damn thefts that can ruin a trip! Last week my mother was traveling through Europe. Everything was happiness until I got a message from her where she told me that she had been robbed EVERYTHING. In the subway of Madrid, they opened the backpack and stole all the cards and all the cash, luckily, had the passport separated and returned to Argentina the next day.

As soon as he arrived in Buenos Aires, we reviewed everything that had happened trying to find the moment of the robbery. And as she told me what had happened, I was taking note of the innocent mistakes I had made.

When we travel we relax and, many times, we forget that we are not exempt from robberies despite being in the first world.

Thinking a little about my poor mother and, a little, on all those people who are close to traveling. I built a list with some tips that I used to avoid theft on every trip I undertook.

Tips to avoid theft in public transport

Traveling by night train can be a dream or a nightmare. On the one hand, the comfort of spending the night sleeping while, almost by magic, we dawn on a different destination, on the other, sleep so deep that we get up with nothing.

It seems an exaggeration, but I saw the girl sleeping on the opposite bed woke up to get off the train and could not find her wallet.

As another boy traveling in the same cabin told me, many thieves often take advantage when one goes to the bathroom to enter the compartment and steal the belongings of those who sleep. That is why many travelers use the purse or backpack as a pillow or we distribute the silver and the documents inside the clothes.

Others, still struggling, are chaining the backpack to the bed rail.

The bad experience that my mother had in the Madrid metro can happen in any city in the world. In particular, meters (more at rush hour) are the pickpockets’ paradise.

When traveling on any public transport of short distances – meters, buses, etc. – belongings must always be in sight. If you are traveling with a backpack or wallet, put it on your chest. Try to have NOTHING in your pockets unless you have your hand there too.

Thieves are always waiting for a little distraction to do their magic. The bad experience that my mother had in the Madrid metro can happen in any city in the world. Tips to avoid theft on the public road

I always appreciate that I have not stolen anything on the street. I do not usually carry everything when I’m in the same place for several days, but I always carry the cell phone, a document that proves identity, some cash and a card.

It is difficult to always be attentive in the street; one is walking around and often forgets about the urban dangers that surround us.

It is important, at the moment of wanting to take a photo, either with camera or with cell phone, look around. In general, well tourist destinations usually have police, but sometimes we get lost in some very beautiful street and we forget to look at the atmosphere that is outside our lens.

If they decide to stop to eat outdoors, at a table outside a cafe or restaurant, take into account your belongings always. Do not leave cell phones or your wallet on the table because it is easy prey of any living that passes by.

It is impossible to prevent robberies in their totality, sometimes we have to suffer them to learn from them. However, there are several precautions that can be taken into account.

Anti-Theft Precautions

You can never guarantee full security, however, there are certain things we can do to, in case the thieves find us, get us as little as possible.

The silver always distributed: the ideal is some change in the pocket, a little in the wallet or backpack, another in the suitcase (except at the time of taking the plane), etc.

Use the pocket of security: this is how I nicknamed the purse that hangs from the neck and goes inside the clothes. I hate it and DO NOT uses it, but more certain than that there is nothing.

Carry separate cards: As with silver, do not carry all cards together. It is important that if they are stolen they are left with something to move.

Documents: Do not go with the passport above that is better always leave it at the hotel and go out with the DNI or other similar document. If they lose the passport they will have to go to the consulate their country to arrange an emergency to be able to return home.

Photocopies of everything important:  Bring a physical copy or a photo on the cell phone of the documents just in case. Also, it is important that they write down the numbers of the credit cards just in case.

I did everything, but I was robbed anyway!

Sometimes it happens, no matter how many precautions we take, we can all be victims of robberies. When we are traveling it is quite terrible that we pass. Not only because of the economic loss, but also because of the sadness of the situation.

It’s complicated that something like that did not change our mood for a long days, or even weeks. If they happen at the beginning of the trip and are left without a weight, ideally they contact their acquaintances in their country of origin so that they put them in contact with someone they could know in the destination where they are. If they do not know anyone, a friend or family member could always transfer money through Western Union or similar chains.

If, within all that bad luck, Have the good fortune that the robbery is in their last days or hours of travel, try to rest as much as possible and go straight to the airport. In such cases, one of the nicest things is to go home and find support from the family.

Robberies are often frustrating and one goes over everything he did in search of error. Sometimes, it is in sight, other times, it does not seem easy to find. The important thing is to leave behind the bad moment and remember the beauty of traveling. A theft can never be the reason not to travel again! Does not seem easy to find.
